Shortcuts for shopping list and favourites in Cookbook Recipes app

Today, we are super excited to let you all know that shortcuts are coming to Cookbook.

Shortcuts is a new feature coming up in Android Nougat. It lets users dive straight into an action within the app.

Imagine you’re going shopping and you want to open the shopping list inside Cookbook. Now you can do it by long-pressing the Cookbook icon. Super simple with absolutely zero friction.

The shortcuts can be dragged to re-arrange the order in which they appear. Also, users can convert shortcuts into icons that’ll act as a ‘mini app’ performing a specific function from within cookbook. Like the shopping list for instance — have a dedicated app that loads up your grocery list with ingredients for all your meal plans.

The shopping list is now 3x more accessible, thanks to shortcuts. Once shortcuts roll out to more android devices, we expect to see an increase of 20–22% increase in shopping list usage.

Coding shortcuts was relatively straightforward. Neeraj, our Android lead, took about half a day to finish coding. It would’ve been even faster if he had a shortcut enabled physical device. Using the emulator to test was the hardest part of building shortcuts into Cookbook. ;) Looking forward to seeing more fellow developers building shortcuts for their apps.

Shortcuts are currently available in the new Google Pixel phones and the Nexus 6P and 5X. It’ll be coming to other Android devices running Nougat soon.
